Hurricane Polo reaches Category 5 off Mexico with 165mph winds

Hurricane Polo intensified from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in under 24 hours off Mexico’s southwest coast, with sustained winds of 165mph on Tuesday as its center sat about 215 miles south of Zihuatanejo in Guerrero state. The National Hurricane Center said Mexico was unlikely to take a direct hit but warned of further intensification, inland flooding, mudslides and dangerous surf. The rapid growth was driven by a record-breaking super El Niño.
