Awny gold mine collapse in northern Sudan kills 10 and injures 21

A collapse on Sunday at the Awny mining area near Sudan’s border with Egypt killed at least 10 people and injured 21, with searches continuing for workers trapped beneath the rubble. Days earlier, at least 82 died when the al-Zaraa mine in West Kordofan collapsed, bringing recent gold-mining deaths to nearly 100 as people scramble for gold in a war-shattered economy that produced 70 tonnes last year.
