Erdogan to run in early 2028 election, sidestepping term limit

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's chief adviser Mehmet Ucum said Thursday that Erdogan, 72, will run in an early presidential election likely set for April 16, 2028, a month before the normal May date. Bringing the vote forward lets Erdogan bypass the constitutional limit of two five-year presidential terms, seeking a fourth term overall since taking power in 2003. Triggering early elections requires 360 of parliament's 600 lawmakers, meaning the AKP and MHP need about 34 more votes.
