Seven Ethiopian armed groups form alliance to overthrow Abiy Ahmed government

Seven Ethiopian armed groups announced on Sunday the formation of the Ethiopian Peoples' Forces Alliance for Survival, aimed at overthrowing the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and establishing an inclusive transitional government. The alliance includes the Amhara Fano National Movement, which has fought federal forces in Amhara since 2023; the Tigray People's Liberation Front, which dominated Ethiopian politics for nearly three decades; and the Oromo Liberation Army, active in Oromia since 2018, plus four smaller groups. Leaders had negotiated for about a year. The move follows recent clashes in Tigray, one of the most serious breaches yet of the 2022 peace deal, deepening fears of a return to full-scale war.
