New wild cat species confirmed in Bolivia, with only one known living member

DNA studies have confirmed a spotted wildcat from Bolivia's forests as a new species, Leopardus tilcayo, previously mistaken for other tiger cats with similar spots and stripes. The feline, about the size of a domestic cat, is known from a single confirmed living specimen — a 10-year-old male nicknamed Tigrino at a rescue sanctuary — which led scientist Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz of Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz to the discovery. Researchers believe more individuals exist and hope the finding draws attention to tiger cat conservation.
