Trump claims deal with Denmark gives US "permanent control" over Greenland

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the US has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland giving it "permanent control" over security in Greenland, with plans to immediately build up a significant US military footprint on the island. US adversaries would be barred from bases or personnel there without written US authorisation. Denmark and Greenland confirmed in a joint statement that a pact is to be signed next week during the UN General Assembly session, subject to parliamentary approval in both Nuuk and Copenhagen. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement recognises the Kingdom's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination.
