The 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discoveries behind optogenetics, which uses light to switch individual nerve cells on or off. The technique grew from Hegemann’s research into how the single-celled alga Chlamydomonas detects light.
