Pro-government forces captured Mekelle after renewed fighting began on Sept. 23, when the Tigray People’s Liberation Front seized three airports and attacked Afar and Amhara. The TPLF withdrew but vowed to continue its campaign to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
