Francis Halzen wins physics Nobel for pioneering neutrino observatory

Belgian physicist Francis Halzen won the Nobel Prize in Physics for leading the development of IceCube, which uses a cubic kilometre of sensor-equipped Antarctic ice at the South Pole to detect high-energy neutrinos from distant cosmic events. He first proposed the concept in 1988.
