Using South Africa's MeerKAT radio telescopes, US researchers have for the first time detected a radio signal directly from a planet outside our solar system: Beta Pictoris b, 63.4 light-years away. It likely comes from an aurora-like effect, not life. How significant is this?

Amerikai kutatók a MeerKAT rádióteleszkóp-hálózattal most először észleltek rádiójelet közvetlenül egy Naprendszeren kívüli bolygóról.

  • A historic moment — this could open the door to mapping the interiors of exoplanets
  • A nice scientific result, but for now more of a technical milestone
  • It's overhyped — until there's talk of a sign of life, I'm less excited
  • What interests me most is what new telescope techniques this could lead to
