How would you resolve the EU dispute over Hungary's tax-free government bonds?

The European Commission has opened a procedure because interest on some Hungarian government bonds has been tax-free since 2019 (exempt from the 15% personal income tax and, since 2023, the 13% social contribution tax), while similar bonds in other EU countries are taxed. The dispute could also affect existing investments.

  • Hungary should keep the exemption, the EU shouldn't interfere
  • Scrap it — tax rules should be uniform across the EU
  • Only change it for new bonds, leave existing ones alone
  • Don't know / don't care
