OpenAI secures $11 billion funding tranche at a $1.25 trillion valuation
OpenAI has taken in roughly $11 billion as the first installment of a new funding round that values the company at $1.25 trillion, with the money wired on Friday according to Bloomberg. The round could still grow to about $20 billion in the coming weeks. That is a step down from an earlier target of $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation, which OpenAI scaled back after an AI-sector selloff.
Named backers include Coatue Management, T. Rowe Price, SoftBank, Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, and a consortium from the United Arab Emirates. Alongside those institutions, OpenAI is working with investment banks to recruit wealthy private individuals—including dentists—to fill out the remaining capital. The Decoder reads that turn to high-net-worth retail money as a sign the AI funding market is saturating or else too concentrated on OpenAI and Anthropic.
Anthropic’s own valuation is under pressure ahead of a planned IPO, even as its B2B traction with Claude Code intensifies competition with OpenAI. Together, the smaller round, the valuation cut, and the hunt for individual investors sketch a more cautious moment in private AI finance than the headline $1.25 trillion figure alone suggests.
