World number one Elena Rybakina withdraws from WTA Finals due to virus
World number one and defending champion Elena Rybakina has withdrawn on the eve of the WTA Finals at Indian Wells due to a viral illness and the physical strain of a demanding season. Organizers confirmed on Saturday that the Kazakh star, who won two Grand Slam titles this year, could not recover in time after previously pulling out of the Pan Pacific Open quarterfinals in Tokyo with a neck injury. Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, who was already on site practicing as an alternate, will replace Rybakina in the eight-player field. The appearance marks a tournament debut for Kostyuk following a breakthrough year highlighted by a title in Madrid and a top-10 ranking.
Tournament director Garbine Muguruza supported Rybakina's decision to rest, emphasizing that the round-robin field remains exceptionally strong. The withdrawal offers world number two Aryna Sabalenka, who captured the Indian Wells trophy earlier this year, a clear opening to close the gap at the top of the rankings. Muguruza also highlighted Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva as a player well-suited to the California desert. Notably, this year's championship was moved to Indian Wells from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after officials determined player safety was paramount amid conflict in the Middle East.
