Security Sunday: The Bundeswehr's New Front in Lithuania with Robertas Kaunas
Germany is advancing the most significant initiative of its defense policy shift, the "Zeitenwende," by permanently stationing Panzerbrigade 45 in Lithuania. Situated directly between the heavily militarized Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, Lithuania occupies what military planners identify as NATO’s most vulnerable geographic chokepoint. Under the initiative, nearly 5,000 German troops will be permanently based on Lithuanian soil by 2027 to solidify deterrence across the alliance's eastern flank.
The strategic deployment addresses a threat landscape that has already shifted from potential confrontation to active destabilization. Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas highlighted that hybrid warfare is already confronting the region through drone incidents, disinformation campaigns, and targeted attacks on critical infrastructure. Kaunas noted that these intensifying provocations demonstrate how immediate the danger of direct conflict remains for the Baltic states.
The initiative also underscores an urgent imperative for European nations to reinforce their own collective security capabilities, particularly if future American security guarantees become uncertain. Ultimately, regional defense planners view deterrence along the Baltic frontier as decisive for the entire continent, recognizing that protecting Vilnius is essential to ensuring the security of Berlin and wider Europe.
